“This experience has moved me. Interacting with all the people in Puerto Peñasco (patients, translators, leaders) has shown me that there is more to life than just ourselves. We have a duty to take care of other humans, and what better gift is there to give a fellow human than listening to their problems and showing them you care. Thank you for this incredible experience ISL.”

About Baja Mexico

ISL’s Baja Mexico program is an on-going humanitarian project that takes place in Puerto Peñasco, situated along the beautiful Sea of Cortez. Though Puerto Peñasco is a safe tourist area, due to high unemployment and high numbers of newly deported nationals struggling to get home, it also houses a very large underserved community. We work with global health agencies, local health ministries, and other NGOs to build capacity in needy communities. Volunteers are able to gain valuable experience regardless of team size, participating in community clinics and working in institutional and community health contexts.

Logistics

The starting point for ISL’s Baja Mexico program is Phoenix, AZ, an easy flight from all major U.S. cities. Volunteers meet with ISL staff in Phoenix and are shuttled to Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, a relaxing four hour drive through the scenic Sonoran Desert. Once we arrive at the program site, travel to and from activities is usually less than 15 minutes. Volunteers must arrive in Phoenix before 3 pm on their scheduled arrival day and depart after 1 pm on their scheduled departure day in order to catch the shuttle to and from Mexico. If you miss your shuttle, you will have to pay $200 for a private shuttle.

Activities

Basic recreational options included in cost of trip: Tide pool exploration, in-shore snorkeling, marine science center visits/presentations, beach time, swimming, souvenir shopping and whale watching (seasonal).

Additional recreational opportunities available at volunteer cost: Banana boat rides ($30), sea and estuary kayaking ($30), jet ski and waverunner rentals ($50), horseback riding on the beach ($25), whale watching cruise (in season) ($40), fishing cruise ($40), parasailing ($35), dinner/sightseeing cruises ($30), ultra-light flying ($35) and ATV touring ($35).

Lodging

Housing is clean and comfortable. Rooms sleep up to four and contain a private bath.
