“Cuba was absolutely amazing and I didn’t want to come home! The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and I can’t begin to express what the trip meant to me.”
-Dr. Lena Rippstein, Schreiner University
ISL is privileged to have been issued a license for an educational partnership with Cuba by the U.S. Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
ISL global health volunteers have the opportunity to learn about and experience the Cuban healthcare system, including visiting neighborhood clinics (providing routine care), Poli-clinics (providing OB, Cardiology, and other specialized services), ancillary care facilities (providing geriatric care) and hospitals. Volunteers also enjoy lectures/presentations by Cuban health experts on the dynamics, history, and cultural aspects of Cuba’s medical system, including the use of indigenous medicines.
Our basic package of cultural and recreational opportunities includes time at some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, zip lining, pool time, touring Old Havana and experiencing its rich night life, and exploring tropical forests. Volunteers will also have opportunities for snorkeling, para sailing, and fishing at their own expense. In addition to enjoying the wonderful recreation opportunities Cuba has to offer, a day and night in Cancun, Mexico, is also included in the cost of the trip.
ISL has strict housing standards for cleanliness, safety and comfort. Each volunteer shares a room and shower facilities, but has their own bed. Housing locations are selected according to proximity to program sites. ISL staff members stay with volunteers and are always available 24/7.
- Internet is available at most housing locations. Volunteers are transported by their Team Leaders to an internet location periodically if internet is not available at their hotel.
- Laundry services are provided at least once a week for a small charge.
- If food or drug stores aren’t nearby, Team Leaders make sure volunteers are transported to shopping areas periodically or as needed.
- ISL provides breakfast each day, unless otherwise specified in the team itinerary.
