.) EXPERIENCE: Hands-on experience is not only great for a resumé, but it also helps you to further understand what you want to do with your education. The difference between the theory of your studies versus the application might increase your interest in your field, or may persuade you to pursue another academic path.
.) THE TIME IS RIGHT: College life is unpredictable. One minute you are cramming until 2 a.m. for a mid-term, and then you suddenly have a week off from all your classes. It may be harder to make the time for a service learning trip post-graduation.
.) FRIENDS: Working with like-minded, empathetic, and driven individuals while providing service for others has a way of forging bonds with others. Friends on an ISL trip can turn into friends for a lifetime, and maybe even co-workers some day.
.) TRAVEL: With 11 different countries to choose from, you have a chance to explore a part of the world you’ve never seen before. You could go to Central America, South America, the Caribbean, or even Africa.
.) LETTER OF REFERENCE: For aspiring physicians, a letter of recommendation can make or break a medical school application. If you travel with ISL, you can request a customized letter of recommendation that details your participation.
.) ADVENTURE: While these trips have a significant focus on both service and learning, there still is time for adventure and exploration of the country you are visiting. This may be going to a local beach, going zip-lining, or visiting the local city centers.
.) LEARN: Learning is a lifelong process, and on an ISL trip, you’ll learn about the world, different cultures, yourself, and so much more!
