Volunteers will be working in ISL partner communities to provide global health services to those in need. While in Peru they will also have the opportunity to learn valuable skills and explore the cultural landscape in a meaningful way.

Global Health Teams

ISL’s global health teams are interdisciplinary and able to provide a variety of general medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, healthcare management, and nutrition services in developing communities. From urban centers to small towns and villages in remote areas, our teams work in various settings to provide field clinics in which patient needs are assessed and acute conditions are treated.

Regardless of background, volunteers are able to receive an invaluable opportunity to not only interactively observe health professionals in action, but to actively assist with important aspects of health care under careful supervision. Our holistic approach makes ISL’s global health teams ideal for students of the health professions at all education levels.


Peru: Coastal Route

The narrow desert belt of Peru’s Pacific coastline stretches the length of the country and harbors fishing villages, beautiful beaches, agricultural lands, and Peru’s major towns and cities, including the capital of Lima. The amazing Andes Mountains separate the arid coastline from the lush Amazon Basin. The ecologically rich tropical rain forests of the Amazon encompass some of the world’s most remote and least explored areas. The Amazon Basin is also home to millions of indigenous highland people, who speak the ancient Inca language of Quechua and live in traditional villages with steeply terraced agricultural fields and wandering herds of llamas and alpacas.

Lima is the capital and largest city in Peru. With a population approaching 9.5 million, Lima is the fourth largest city in all of the Americas. ISL teams work in developing communities in and around the city after taking seminars on tropical disease, vital signs, physical exams, public health surveys, and medical Spanish.


What ISL Provides

ISL Provides 24-hour accompaniment by professional, bilingual staff, airport pickup/drop off, all ground transportation, all lodging, two meals per day (all meals on All Inclusive programs), drinking water, instruction by licensed medical professionals, project medications and supplies, tours and basic recreation.

What to Bring

All volunteers will need a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, otoscope, scrubs, donations of medications and medical supplies (optional), and *funds sufficient to cover one meal per day, premium recreation, personal spending, and departure tax.

*All Inclusive programs include all meals and recreation, so bring funds only to cover personal spending and departure tax.

Sample Global Health Itinerary

9 Day Program

 

Important Program Note:  Teams will participate in some of the following global health activities: home visits, institutional assignments, community clinics and work with professionals, class practice for taking vitals, suture and injection class, and school screenings/health education sessions. Therefore, time periods noted as “Global Health Activities” may refer to any of the above, to be determined based on volunteer expertise level and needs of our community at the time.

 

Optional Activities: Are available upon request.

 

Day 1:  Arrive in Lima, Peru, exchange money, settle into housing, dinner and rest.

Practical and Medical Orientation; Medical Spanish class.

 

Day 2:  Global Health Activities; Pharmacology Seminar; city tour of Lima.

 

Day 3:  Global Health Activities; Suture Seminar.

 

Day 4:  Global Health Activities; Travel to Pisco/Paracas.

 

Day 5:  Global Health Activities in Pisco.

 

Day 6:  Global Health Activities; city tour and souvenir shopping in the afternoon.

 

Day 7:  Global Health Activities; Group reflection.

 

Day 8:  Recreation; Ballestas Island, Paracas National Reserve and Huacachina oasis; Handicrafts and cultural experience.  Options for R&R to visit: Dune buggy rides at Huacachina: $18.00, Ballestas Island: $14.00,
Paracas National reserve: $5.00

Return to Lima.
