How to Apply!

To begin your amazing journey with ISL you will need to decide on the trip that would best fit your schedule and give you the most opportunity for field experience.

Go to our 2009 Team Schedule and Costs  for dates, destinations, costs, as well as the deposit deadline dates. (Select your dates)

You can check out the different countries to help you make your decision. In addition to that source, we’ll be glad to answer any other questions you may have via phone or e-mail.  If you’d like a phone call, just send your number and a good time to call.  You may also call us at (816) 767-0481 between 8:00am and 4:30pm Central time.  You may also be interested in visiting with one of our veteran students for first hand information, just let us know.

The schedule notes the type of team (health, education, international service).  Departure for Mexico teams is from Harlingen, Texas and the team travels by van across the border into Mexico. All other teams fly directly into country.

Some commonly requested info:  There are a maximum of 15-18 students per team (depending on country).  Any undergrad or graduate is eligible.  If you are a graduate please let us know.  Also, see the FAQ’s Link on our homepage at Frequently Asked Questions.

Once you have settled on the best trip for you just:

1. Print out a copy of the  Application Form. The application can also be found on the homepage under "Downloads You'll Want". If you don't have a passport or are renewing your passport you can send in your application without this information.

2. If you are interested in taking advantage of our Sponsorship Program through Good Samaritan Missions, fill out the Sponsorship Agreement  which is the last page of the application.  You can find out how the sponsorship program works by clicking on Funding Your Trip which offers information on fundraising, then go to Sponsorship Program – How it Works.

3. If you are interested in an Extended Program you can find all of the information by clicking on the Extended Program link. You will need to talk to ISL to work out the details on your extension so it may be best to contact ISL before you fill out your application.

4. Fill in the application and mail it in along with your $65 application fee and $500 deposit (made out to International Service Learning) to:

International Service Learning

Processing Center

2209 Elma St.

Kansas City, MO 64124

5. Once your application has been received by ISL you will begin receiving emails from your Team Manager with important details about your trip.  Make sure you check your email for messages from ISL.  Print them out and keep them for future reference and feel free to contact your Team Manager with any questions you may have.

6. It is a requirement for all team members to have medical and travel insurance. If you currently have medical insurance check with them to make sure you are covered out of the country for the entire time you are traveling. Find out how the insurance works and what it covers and all limitations. You will also need coverage for pre and post flight situations, all types of cancellation, evacuation and repatriation of remains. Many students have found that a combination of their medical insurance and an International Student Identification Card (ISIC) have been beneficial in covering their travel needs. For details on securing an identification card and insurance please go to Useful Resources. Look under the Travel Insurance/Passport section.

*TAKE NOTICE*

The State Department has been swamped with passport applications so it is currently taking a minimum of 12 weeks to renew or receive a new passport. It can take longer depending upon the demand at the time you apply. Take this into consideration if you do not have a passport and make sure you apply in plenty of time to receive your passport in time for your trip.

For details on Withdrawal and Refunds please read our Withdrawal and Refund Policy.

If you are interested in getting a letter of reference from ISL after your trip you will need to contact Pepper Tucker at info@ISLonline.org with your request.  All students requesting a letter of reference need to return a brief trip evaluation which is sent to each ISL trip veteran immediately after their trip.  ISL offers a letter of reference based on the reviews of our staff and doctors, but not from them directly. Our local doctors write evaluations after each group and these evaluations are consulted in the writing of the letter sent out by ISL.  After the post trip ISL evaluation has been received and approved, you may request a recommendation from field staff through info@ISLonline.org, as a special request.

You can send payment by personal check, cashier's check or money order, made payable to International Service Learning.  If you are having problems with your payments please contact your Team Manager or our main office at info@ISLonline.org  or phone 816-767-0481 between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm Central time.
