“I know that we were able to leave such an impact by our acts of service to the people of Panama. Another highlight was simply the friendships among us that grew richer each day, and how we are all now connected by this shared experience. I know this is what I’m supposed to be doing with my life, continuing on this journey to becoming a dentist and seeing how global missions can play a part in that. The fact that I will get to do this for the rest of my life makes me so excited for the future. I’m extremely grateful that I had the opportunity to go to Panama, and I’ll always have the memories of this trip to carry with me.”

About Panama

Situated on the isthmus connecting North and South America, Panama is the southernmost country in Central America. With access to two different oceans, and containing mountains, a vast rainforest, the modern metropolis of Panama City and the Panama Canal, there is a lot to do and see. Added to Panama’s incredible geographical diversity is an intriguing contrast of cultures. Panama contains a rich array of cultures ranging from indigenous and Latino to peoples of African, Asian, and European descent.

Logistics

Volunteers arrive for service in Panama via the Tocumen International Airport, Panama, airport (PTY), which is located 15 Miles from Panama City. After going through customs and picking up their luggage, volunteers are met by one of their field team leaders. They are then transported in an ISL van or bus 15 miles (or 30 minutes) to their lodging in Panama City. Teams generally travel 30 to 60 minutes each day from housing to work site. Housing locations may change as the team moves to their Recreation Day location or to a new work site.

Activities

Recreational activities may include a tour of Panama City and the Panama Canal, a visit to the Metropolitan Natural Park to see monkey, birds, sloths, etc., a day at beach on the Atlantic or Pacific coast to swim, snorkel, or relax, or a zip line tour of the rainforest canopy. Teams that work in Chiriqui take a boat tour along the Gulf of Chiriqui to one of the national park islands.

Lodging

Teams are housed in modest hotels. Each volunteer is guaranteed a bed and a shower. Lodging for Hike for Humanity teams is more basic and includes camping. ISL has strict housing standards of cleanliness, safety and comfort.
