Tanzania

Below is a map of the north-east area of Tanzania that the teams travel to and work in.

Airports:

Students arrive and depart from Kilimanjaro Int'l Airport.

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

Located in Moshi, Tanzania, Kilimanjaro International Airport is a small airport that serves the community near Mount Kilimanjaro. Despite its small size, the airport can handle aircraft up to Boeing 747s. The airport is not a hub for any airline, but because it is in Tanzania it sees a large number of flights from Air Tanzania.

Clinic Sites:

Teams travel to these areas to set up clinics and provide health care.

Faraja

Located southwest of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Rombo

Located to the east of Moshi, near the Kenyan border.

Masai Region

ISL works throughout this region with the Masai people.

Bumbuli

Located in the mountains west of the port town of Tanga.

Recreation Sites:

Three or four days of the three week trip are designated as recreation days. Recreation day activities may include any of the below options.

Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park

At 5,895 m, Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa and one of the largest free standing mountains in the world. This volcanic massif stands in splendid isolation above the surrounding plains, with its snowy peak looming over the savannah. The mountain is encircled by mountain forest. Numerous mammals, many of them endangered species, live in the park.

Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area in the Serengeti National Park

The Ngorongoro Crater Conservatory, the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world, borders the Serengeti National Park to the north and west. The 600 meter deep crater is home to a permanent population of more than 30,000 animals, and is one of the only places in Africa where you stand a very good chance of seeing the “big five” (lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant) in the course of a morning or evening’s game drive.

Lake Manyara

Although small, it is one of the prettiest and most game rich parks in the country. Two thirds of the park consists of water, with the Great Rift Valley Escarpment rising sharply and dramatically along the western side. Lake Manyara is well known for its tree climbing lions and there are also plenty of leopards. Lake Manyara is a great safari spot for bird viewing and also has a healthy population of ungulates such as buffalo and wildebeest. Many animals can be seen grazing the new shoots on the floodplain and wallowing in the shallows of the lake, while further out pods of hippos bob.

Moshi

A bustling town located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Sokoine Rain Forest Mountain Preserve

The Sokoine Rain Forest Mountain Preserve is part of nine mountain ranges, covered by rainforests, situated in a half-moon shape in southern Kenya and eastern Tanzania known as the Eastern Arc. One of the oldest rainforests in the world, the Arc is one of the top twenty "hot spots" for biodiversity in the world. Collectively, the Arc is the sole habitat of thousands of plants and animals found no where else.

Tanga

Tanga is the most important Tanzanian port after Dar, and lies just south of the Kenyan border. Known for the superb beaches which sprawl to the south of the town, and the vibrant night life that transforms the town after dark.

Bagamoyo

Seventy kilometers north of Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo (“Lay down your heart”) was the original capital of German East Africa, and was, in its heyday, one of the most important slaving towns in East Africa.
